EV Charging Installation in Dorset

EV charging

Smart EV charging installed as part of the home-energy plan.

A dedicated home charger on its own circuit, planned alongside any solar and battery so the car uses your own generation whenever it can.

Free and no obligation. Payment options available on qualifying routes.

Solar-aware charging

Let the car use your own generation first.

Paired with the right inverter, a smart charger can take your spare solar before it touches the grid. If panels or a battery are already installed, we look at how a charger would sit alongside them before suggesting a model.

Where the charger goes

The cable route is part of the design.

Many Dorset homes have solid stone walls, and some chargers end up on a garage or outbuilding some way from the consumer unit. The route the cable takes, what it passes through and how far it runs all change the job, so we plan them at the survey and show the result in your proposal.

Tariffs

Cheaper hours as well as spare solar.

Where there is a smart tariff, charging can be timed for the cheaper hours, with surplus solar topping up by day. The saving depends on the tariff, and we go through it with you.

Grants

What the grant covers today.

The EV Chargepoint Grant currently covers 75% of the cost of a home charger, up to £500, but it has been restricted to renters, flat owner-occupiers and leaseholders, and landlords installing for tenants since 2022 (the £500 cap itself is an April 2026 increase from £350). Homeowners in a standard house are no longer eligible. We'll confirm what, if anything, applies to your situation as part of your proposal.

Payment options for the wider project, including qualifying no-upfront-cost routes, can be discussed when your proposal is prepared.

Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. The installation team behind Dorset Solar acts as a credit broker, not a lender. Asking about payment options is not a finance application and won't affect your credit file.

The installation

What the job involves.

A dedicated circuit

A separate circuit runs from your consumer unit to the charger, with the cabling included in the job.

Consumer unit capacity

If the unit is full we say so in the proposal, along with what extra work that means.

A safe cable route

A path from house to car that does not cross a public footpath.

Somewhere to park

Whether the property suits a charger is confirmed at the survey.

Common questions

Common EV charging questions.

Can I charge the car from my own panels?

Yes, given the right charger and inverter. A smart charger can be told to use only spare solar, so the car fills up whenever the roof is producing more than the house uses.

Tethered or untethered?

A tethered unit has its cable fixed to it, so you plug in and go. An untethered one has a socket and uses the lead that came with your car. They charge at the same speed, so it comes down to convenience versus a tidier wall.

How fast is home charging?

Home chargers are almost all 7kW, good for roughly 25 to 30 miles of range every hour. A flat 60kWh battery needs 8 to 10 hours to fill, which suits overnight charging.

Can I have a charger without a driveway?

What matters is getting a cable from the house to the car without it crossing a public footpath. Properties vary, so it is checked at the survey.
